Mdou Moctar’s “Wiwarsharnine” is another beautiful track from his upcoming new album – “Ilana (the Creator).”

Today, virtuosic Tuareg guitarist and songwriter releases “Wiwarsharnine,” the new single off his forthcoming album Ilana (The Creator), out March 29th on Sahel Sounds.  This follows the first single off the record, the steadily-building-to-boil “Kamane Tarhanin,” which turned a lot of heads that had never heard Moctar’s hypnotizing music.

“Wiwasharnine” is one of the standout tracks on Ilana and a favorite in Niger. Unfolding with pop and upbeat vibe, “Wiwsharnine” contrasts somewhat with the heavy political sensibilities in the lyrics. (included below). This contrast is often at the heart of Tuareg guitar, where burning guitar solos carry fierce messages of resistance. Nevertheless, “Wiwasharnine” is a hometown anthem, and the recording stays true to it’s form with a chorus of stomping and handclaps that bring it back to an outdoor wedding in the desert.

In other Mdou-related news, on his recent US tour in January, he proved himself more than just a guitar hero, but a full-stop HERO, when, after witness a car accident on the highway in Tennessee, he jumped from his tour van and kicked open a car door to help bring one of the accident’s victims to safety. What a guy!

Moctar hails from a small village in the Azawagh desert of Niger. As a child, he taught himself to play homemade guitars, cobbled together out of planks of wood. In an area where guitar music was all but prohibited, he quickly rose to the status of local celebrity amongst the village youth. In contrast to the polished style of Imarhan or Bombino, Mdou Moctar trades in unrelenting gritty rock and has no qualms about going full shred. But Mdou’s success is not confined to guitar theatrics alone. From his experiments in autotune (Music from Saharan Cellphones, 2011), unfiltered field recordings (Afelan, 2013), DIY overdubbed folk ballads (Sousoume Tamachek, 2017), to a starring role in a Saharan remake of Purple Rain (Akounak Tedalat Taha Tazoughai, 2015), Mdou stands out amongst his peers for his unparalleled vision.

“WIWARSHARNINE” LYRICS
This life today I understand nothing
The strongest are always the ones who eliminate the weak
This world is always changing sometimes rising sometimes falling
But nothing ever changes for my people
All the countries are in joy
But my people remain stranded
and this pains me

CHAI unleash another killer single – “Choose Go!” – from album due March 15th.

Japanese four-piece CHAI shares a new single, “CHOOSE GO!,” off of their sophomore album, PUNK, due March 15th via Burger Records, and an accompanying video. Following rebellious single, “Fashionista,” and previously released “GREAT JOB,” “CHOOSE GO!” is an upbeat anthem to be free to choose whatever it is you want to do, however you want to do it. Directed by previous collaborators – Japan-based creative collective Team Mikansei (“Boyz Seco Man”) – the video features vibrant set designs, coordinated costumes, synchronized dance moves, and an eccentric twist on sports.

“Cheerleaders, who are usually known for cheering for athletes on the sideline, now become the actual athletes and are shown as baseball players! It’s the evolution of what is already in existence like sports or cheerleaders to then what would be considered non-existent or fantasy like cheerleaders turned into baseball players and barbies tossed instead of footballs by football players, which makes this music video so cool! CHOOSE GO! CHOOSE FREEDOM!”

PUNK follows their debut album, PINK. If PINK was a plastic, hyper-bright introduction, then PUNK is a deeper, more impactful graduation. It’s the movement from vivid orange to radiating red.

CHAI will bring their energetic live shows to North America in support of PUNK. All tour dates are below.

Claude Fontaine’s debut reggae / world music single, “Cry for Another,” is a stunner.

Los Angeles-based songwriter and singer, Claude Fontaine, is thrilled to announce she’s signed with Innovative Leisure (LA-based label who has worked with the likes of BADBADNOTGOOD, Rhye, Allah-Las, Nosaj Thing, Hanni El Khatib, Nick Waterhouse, Classixx, etc). Today, she shares her debut single, “Cry For Another,” a heartfelt nod to the Studio One, Trojan, and Treasure Isle records that inspired it. “‘Cry For Another’ is about the feeling when someone is slipping through your fingers, and even though you know that person may not be right, you’re still pining for more,” says Fontaine. “Possibly to remind yourself of why they’re wrong for you, or perhaps to remember what you’re going to miss.”

Watch Video For “Cry For Another” – https://youtu.be/ztHTOL_EJWM

Fontaine wrote and demoed “Cry For Another”, a track which sounds like it came out of Jamaica in the 1970s, after a living in London and stumbling into Honest Jon’s, a long-lived spot for fringe records. Recorded at Chet Baker’s legendary old studio in Hollywood, Fontaine recorded the track with a murderer’s row of session players, including guitarist Tony Chin, (Althea and Donna, King Tubby, Dennis Brown), drummer Rock Deadrick (Ziggy Marley), bassist Ronnie McQueen (Steel Pulse), and piano/organ player Jaime Hinckson (Hollie Cook, Daniel ‘Bambaata’ Marley).

Set to be released later this year, Fontaine’s debut album is a love song to classic reggae and Brazilian music, and an album honoring that feeling of finding a home away from home. In addition to Chin, Deadrick, McQueen, and Hinckson, Fontaine is joined in the studio by Airto Moreira, the Brazilian drummer whose work both solo and in collaboration—with Miles Davis, Astrud Gilberto, Chick Corea, Annette Peacock—make him an actual living legend, Andre De Santanna (Sergio Mendes, Flora Purim), Gibi Dos Santos (Sergio Mendes), Nando Duarte (Gal Costa, Elza Soares), and Fabiano Do Nascimento (Mia Doi Todd).

“I hope this record will transport people,” she Fontaine. “I want it to feel like those lost records, like it got lost in the dusty bottom bin of some world music store in London because that’s how I felt when I walked in to that record store. I want it to be its own world.”

Turning Jewels into Water’s debut album, “Map of Absences,” due March 15th.

Turning Jewels Into Water is a live electronic duo led by Indian-born drummer/producer Ravish Momin along with Haitian electronic percussionist Val Jeanty. They seamlessly blend futuristic turntables, ritual chants, polyrhythmic percussion, live loops and synth melodies along with rhythms inspired by global dance music. Their new album, Map of Absences, will be released March 15th via FPE Records. They share the lead single, “Dark waters rushing in,” with an accompanying video directed by Travis Williams and featuring Flex Dancer Infinite.Brynn and Fire dancer RaNubi.

Watch Turning Jewels Into Water’s “Dark waters rushing in” Video – https://youtu.be/TAKwMvOgri0

This new project with Val Jeanty arose from her participation in a jam session at Pioneer Works in Brooklyn, NY while Momin was artist-in-residence there in September of 2017. Their collaboration, rooted in improvisation, evokes the esoteric realms of the creative subconscious. Drawing from the voodoo religion, Val recreates the ancient rhythm and pulse of Haiti through digital beats, while Momin, whose own musical background is rooted in Indian, North African and Middle Eastern traditions, has developed an original blend of electro-acoustic beats, drawing together the improvisational traditions in Jazz and Indian folk music. Together, they employ cutting-edge music-technological tools such as acoustic drums outfitted with Sensory Percussion triggers, Force Sensing Resistor (FSR) drum pads and Smart Fabric MIDI Controllers, but still emphasize the ritual aspects of creating music in the digital realm.

Their unique sounds quickly caught the interest of music curators and in 2018 they performed at the Bang On A Can Marathon (NYC), ZEZ Festival (Croatia), Tarcento Jazz Festival (Italy) and various venues in Slovenia, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Switzerland and Italy. They closed out the year with a two-day run in Washington, DC where they performed at the Flash of the Spirit Festival at Georgetown University and the Anacostia Arts Center. They released a critically-acclaimed EP on FPE Records entitled Which Way is Home, which featured remixes from rising-stars Slikback and Zilla, both of whom came heartily recommended by the crew that operates the Kampala, Uganda-based Nyege Nyege Tapes record label.

“Our full-length record, Map of Absences, is a reflection on the regressive state of human rights, deepening refugee crises and the worsening impacts of climate change worldwide. Imagine a world where refugees of color are free to cross borders, LGBTIA people are treated fairly and respectfully, and environmental healing technologies are widespread. These ideas are unfortunately absent from our current reality. We say ‘absent’ instead of ‘forgotten’ as the latter implies an instance of memory or a record of those things having existed. Musically, we drew inspiration from artists such as DJ Lag, Nidia, DJ Rashad, Nihiloxica, and Epic B amongst our other varied global influences. For the album artwork we tapped Marissa Malik, a UK-based artist whose work evokes the mystical and empowered mythical beings. For remixes, we returned to Kenyan maverick Slikback (Hakuna Kulala) and also approached PlayPlay (who ran the legendary Party Illegal in Durham, NC for years) and the modular-synth wielding producer Nueve Vidas from Mexico City.”

Turning Jewels Into Water will tour in support of Map of Absences this spring. A list of dates is below with more to be announced soon.

Mdou Moctar’s new album, “Ilana (The Creator),” due March 29th.

Tuareg guitarist and songwriter Mdou Moctar is proud to announce his new album – his first recorded in a proper studio – Ilana (The Creator) – out Mar. 29th on Sahel Sounds. He has shared the first single, “Kamane Tarhanin,” and has announced spring tour dates in support of the new record.

LISTEN TO “KAMANE TARHANIN” https://bit.ly/2QOrZBh

Mdou Moctar immediately stands out as one of the most innovative artists in contemporary Saharan music. His unconventional interpretations of Tuareg guitar have pushed him to the forefront of a crowded scene. Back home, he’s celebrated for his original compositions and verbose poetry, an original creator in a genre defined by cover bands. In the exterior, where Saharan rock has become one of the continents biggest musical exports, he’s earned a name for himself with his guitar moves. Mdou shreds with a relentless and frenetic energy that utterly sets him apart.

Mdou Moctar hails from a small village in central Niger in a remote region steeped in religious tradition. Growing up in an area where secular music was all but prohibited, he taught himself to play on a homemade guitar cobbled together out of wood. It was years before he found a “real” guitar and taught himself to play in secret. His immediately became a star amongst the village youth.

In 2008, Mdou traveled to Nigeria to record his debut album of spacey autotune, drum machine, and synthesizer. The album became a viral hit on the mp3 networks of West Africa, and was later released on the compilation Music from Saharan Cellphones. In 2013, he released Afelan, compiled from field recordings of his performances recorded in his village. Then he shifted gears, producing and starring in the first Tuareg language film, a remake of Prince’s Purple Rain (Rain the Color Blue with a Little Red in It). Finally, in 2017, he created a solo folk album, Sousoume Tamachek, a mellow blissed out recording evoking the calm desert soundscape. Without a band present, he played every instrument on the record. “I am a very curious person and I want to push Tuareg music far,” he says.

A long time coming, Ilana is Mdou’s first true studio album with a live band. Recorded in Detroit at the tail end of a US tour by engineer Chris Koltay (the two met after bonding over ZZ Top’s Tres Hombres), the band lived in the studio for a week, playing into the early hours. Mdou was accompanied by an all-star band: Ahmoudou Madassane’s (Les Filles de Illighadad) lighting fast rhythm guitar, Aboubacar Mazawadje’s machine gun drums, and Michael Coltun’s structured low-end bass. The album was driven by lots of spontaneity – Mdou’s preferred method of creation – jumping into action whenever inspiration struck. The resulting tracks were brought back to Niger to add final production: additional guitar solos, overdubs of traditional percussion, and a general ambiance of Agadez wedding vibes.

The result is Mdou’s most ambitious record to date. Ilana takes the tradition laid out by the founders into hyperdrive, pushing Tuareg guitar into an ever louder and blistering direction. For Mdou, his style is to draw on both modern and traditional sources and combine elements into new forms. In “Ilana” Mdou reaches back into Tuareg folklore for inspiration, riffing on the hypnotic loops of takamba griots, or borrowing vocal patterns from polyphonic nomad songs, and combining them with his signature guitar. You can hear the effect in tracks like “Kamane Tarhanin,” where a call and response lyric lifts up over a traditional vocal hum before breaking into a wailing solo with tapping techniques learned from watching Youtube videos of Eddie Van Halen.

As Mdou travels the world, he divides his time between two places, alternating from lavish weddings in Agadez to sold out concerts in Berlin nightclubs. It offers a unique perspective, but also means that he needs to address different audiences. At home, his compositions send a message to his people. Abroad, his music is an opportunity to be heard and represent his people on a world stage.

Review: Khruangbin – Con Todo El Mundo

I am severely late to the Khruangbin party. I’d heard snippets of their gorgeous album, Con Todo El Mundo, but the full album somehow escaped me nearly the entire year. I’m glad to have caught up, however, because their third record is a lovely mix of jazz, psychedelia, and Iranian / Middle Eastern funk grooves.

Starting with the soulful “Como Me Quieres” (“How Much Do You Love Me”), guitarist Mark Speer produces such clear, beautiful tones that the general vibe around you instantly changes upon hearing them. It slows down everything and gets your mind to notice how fast everyone else is whizzing by you. “Lady and Man” is just as nice, with Speer’s love of Middle Eastern guitar riffs coming to the fore, and drummer Donald Johnson puts on a clinic in solid backing grooves (and does so through the whole record). “Maria Tambien” sizzles from the first chord and doesn’t let up for the next three minutes. You’ll swear you’re riding in a taxi through Marrakesh while you’re listening to it.

“August 10” is a blissful, laid-back track with a bass groove so subtle by Laura Lee that it’s almost like a lover’s whisper across your pillow. “Como Te Quiero” brings in psychedelic reverb on Lee’s vocal sounds to nice effect. You could set your watch to Johnson’s beats on “Shades of Man.” They’re so precise that they almost sound like they were created in the Matrix, but he’s just that good.

Lee keeps repeating “Yes” on “Evan Finds the Third Room,” a funky cut that gets you dancing and features one of her phattest bass grooves. She and Speer just cut loose while Johnson keeps them rooted enough to not go over the cliff. “A Hymn” is suitably mellow and meditative. By the time “Rules” arrives, you realize that Con Todo El Mundo is possibly the best make-out album of 2018. In fact, “Friday Morning” is a perfect song to play while fixing breakfast for your lover after a great Thursday night.

This album is one of the prettiest I’ve heard all year, and a better cure for a hectic day than Netflix and chill.

Keep your mind open.

CHAI announce first 2019 U.S. tour dates and release new video / single “Great Job.”

CHAI ANNOUNCE 2019 US TOUR DATES;

WATCH NEW VIDEO FOR “GREAT JOB”

(photo: Julien Kelly-Gross)

Japanese sensations CHAI graced the shores of the US for an all-too-brief visit in September, with shows in New York and Los Angeles. Known for their energetic shows, matching outfits, absolutely insane music videos, and innovative concept of “NEO-Kawaii,” or “New Cute” (an empowering way to look at the frequently oppressive concept of cuteness in their home country), they captured the hearts of everyone who saw them perform. Pitchfork dubbed them a “Rising” artist and they just completed a hugely successful stint opening for Superorganism in the UK. So what’s next for the trendsetting young women of CHAI?

How about surprise-dropping a new video earlier this month for a new song “GREAT JOB“? How about announcing their first batch of tour dates in US for 2019, including their first US festival performance at Boise’s Treefort Music Fest? How about a return to Austin for SXSW? 2019 promises to be an even bigger year for CHAI than 2018, with more live dates to come, so this is only the beginning.

GONG GONG GONG’S DEBUT 7″ FOR WHARF CAT OUT NOW

STREAM “SIREN” AND “SOMETHING’S HAPPENING”

CATCH THEM ON TOUR WITH FLASHER AND PUBLIC PRACTICE

Beijing duo Gong Gong Gong pose an intriguing challenge to listeners. There are no drums in this band, but it is undoubtedly percussive. Singer Tom Ng’s lyrics are in Cantonese, but the urgency of previously shared single “Siren” is plain as day. Their driving, stripped-down transnational blues, tapping into the spirit of Bo Diddley, the Monks, and psychedelic music from West Africa to Southeast Asia, is both foreign and familiar. You can read an interview with them in Alt Citizen.

Last week, their debut single for Wharf Cat was released, featuring the aforementioned “Siren,” and now the b-side, the instrumental “Something’s Happening.”

Additionally, earlier last week, they shared a song off a forthcoming limited-edition (only 100 will be made) tour flexi-disc 7″ split, which also features tour mates Flasher and Public Practice. They’ve also announced a NY date opening up for post-punk legends Bush Tetras in December. Catch them on tour the US, and listen to the new output of this utterly unique and singular band.

Beijing duo Gong Gong Gong release premiere single – “Siren”

INTRODUCING BEIJING DUO GONG GONG GONG

LISTEN TO DEBUT SINGLE ON WHARF CAT, “SIREN 追逐劇“; CATCH THEM ON TOUR THIS FALL

Beijing’s Gong Gong Gong make driving, stripped-down transnational blues, tapping into the spirit of Bo Diddley, the Monks, and psychedelic music from West Africa to Southeast Asia. “Phantom Rhythm” is the concept at the duo’s core: between Tom Ng’s percussive guitar and Joshua Frank’s melodic, charging bass, an aura of ghostly snare hits emerges over a thumping low-end pulse. Atop this framework, Ng recounts Cantonese tales of absurdity, love and lust with fragmented, wry vision.

On their first US release, “Siren 追逐劇” b/w “ Something’s Happening 突發 “ (out 11/9 on Wharf Cat) Gong Gong Gong brings to life a cinematic chase scene. Shot-by-shot, frame-by-frame, “Siren 追逐劇 is a story of galloping hooves and screeching tires—a horse and car racing each other through mountains and desert, charging into the city. The flip-side, instrumental “Something’s Happening 突發” is Gong Gong Gong at their most raw: locomotive jangle and fuzz-faced roar. Dust, sweat and engine oil, the landscape rushing by. Gong Gong Gong have dates lined up on both sides of the Atlantic with the likes of Parquet Courts, Bodega and Flasher. A full list of upcoming tour dates is below.

Imarhan – Temet

Algerian musicians Imarhan are expanding the range of Tuareg music by including touches of psychedelia, surf, and rock on their new album Temet.

Opener “Azzaman” (“The Times / Time”) has beats that are both trance and dance-inducing, and the guitar is fiery when it kicks into gear.  The guitar work on “Tamudre” is psychedelic funk, and the hand percussion is like a bubbling pot of hearty stew.  “Ehad Wa Dagh” (“A Covenant and an Argument”) will get you moving.  Seriously, put this on any exercise playlist you have.  The band cooks through the whole thing and will have you burning calories faster than any spin bike or kickboxing instructor can manage.  I love how the guitars on “Alwa” move from subtle to brash and back again in an instant.

The opening of “Imuhagh” is positively hypnotic.  The guitars soar like a hawk overhead, the vocals seem to call to you from a distant dune, and the drums prowl like a cat on mouse patrol.  They shred “Tumast” almost beyond belief, with guitars that come at you like a freight train and percussion like a landslide.  It’s one of the hottest tracks I’ve heard all year.  “Tarha Nam” is the calm after the storm of “Tumast,” and “Tochal” is another guitar showcase that would make Lindsey Buckingham jealous.  “Zinizjumeg” and “Ma S-Abok” end the album a calm that’s much appreciated in this day and age.

I fell in love with Tuareg music a few years ago.  It never ceases to bring me joy, make me dance, or ground me in the present.  Imarhan’s Temet is another fine piece of art in the genre.
