Mamby on the Beach artist spotlight: MGMT

Psychedelic freaks MGMT (Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser) will be closing the Beach Stage at Mamby on the Beach on June 24th. MGMT are known for loud, reverb-laced, synth-driven psychedelia and their show is sure to be a mind trip.  They’ve been nominated for multiple Grammy Awards and sound not unlike a younger Flaming Lips.  Don’t miss out on the freak-out.

Keep your mind open.

Mamby on the Beach artist spotlight: Miike Snow

Swedish electro-pop duo Miike Snow (Christian Karlsson, Pontus Winnberg, and American singer Andrew Wyatt) make bright, shimmering songs that are rooted in vintage synthesizers and other electro gear.  Part of their stage piece is a massive device known as “the Blob” that is a hodgepodge of synths, drum machines, and other cool stuff to avoid using laptops to make their music.

They’ll be playing the Beach Stage at Mamby on the Beach June 24th, and I’m sure their set will be a crowd favorite.

Keep your mind open.

Mamby on the Beach artist spotlight: Marian Hill

Philadelphia’s Marian Hill (Jeremy Lloyd and Samantha Gongol) got their name from combining the names of two characters from The Music Man.  Lloyd’s slick production combines trip-hop with a bit of trance while Gongol’s vocals are torch singer meets soul diva.  They’ll play the Beach Stage at Mamby on the Beach June 24th.

Mamby on the Beach artist spotlight: Rayvn Lenae

Chicago’s Rayvn Lenae is a teenaged R&B artist who is talented beyond her young years.  Her blend of soul and electro is so smooth that you could practically ice skate on it.  She’ll be playing the Beach Stage at Mamby on the Beach June 24th.  I have a feeling her show will be one many will be talking about over the weekend and for years when she explodes into the mainstream.

Keep your mind open.

Mamby on the Beach artist spotlight: Will Clarke

Will Clarke is a DJ from Bristol, England who puts down floor-shaking club beats with titles like “Booty Percolatin’.”  I love how a lot of his stuff sounds like mid-1990’s rave material.  He’ll be playing the Mixmag tent at Mamby on the Beach on June 24th in a midday set that I’m sure will be killer.

Keep your  mind open.

[I’ll be in your house every day if you subscribe.]

Mamby on the Beach artist spotlight: Tchami

French DJ Tchami is the pioneer of music he calls “future house.”  It’s not a bad description at all because he seems to mix stuff you’d hear in a disco with stuff you’d hear in the world of Tron.  He’ll be closing the Mixmag tent at Mamby on the Beach on June 24th at 8:30pm.

Keep your mind open.

Mamby on the Beach artist spotlight: Fancy Fux

Chicago’s Fancy Fux will be playing a 2:00pm set on the first day of Mamby on the Beach.  They play a fun blend of house, hip hop, and dub.  Their first big single, “Stripper,” is outstanding, and clips of their live sets look like a good time.  They should be a fun start to the festival.  Tickets are still available, by the way.

Keep your mind open.

Nine Inch Nails to release two EPs within nine months.

Nine Inch Nails recently announced they’ll be releasing two EPs in the next seven to nine months.  The two EPs follow the December 2016 EP Not the Actual Events, and the band says the three EPs are linked (but they haven’t revealed how they are).  The first is scheduled before the start of their summer tour in July, and the next will be released “6 to 8 months” after that.

Though he may still be tweaking the space laser to perfect album Numero Twomero (hey, it’s a working title), Todd Terje has still found the time to tease us with “Maskindans,” a sneak preview of what’s to come in the form of this body-moving, brain-grooving cover version of a Norse synth spectacular from the dystopian dance floors of 1982. Inspired by his Dansbar diversions, Todd took to the studio for a little multi-track mania, replaying every part of this doomy dancer with all the Olsen sparkle you could ever wish for. Luring Det Gylne Triangel back into the booth for the first time in 25 years (possibly in his trusty Delorean!), Terje topped off the pops with a newly recorded vocal from the original lyricist, closing the temporal loop and opening the door to dance floor nirvana.

With a minimal wave goodbye to the moodier moments of the original, Terje turns up the funk and gets lost in the groove on this deep discoid delight. After an unruly intro of malfunctioning sirens and squawking synths, “Maskindans” morphs into a nasty new wave nodder, bursting with chorus bass, mutant guitar riffs and infectious 4/4. Ola Ødegård´s monotone vocals stomp along with darkened eyes and backcombed hair, throwing angular shapes and computer feelings before the track romps off into interstellar overdrive. Punching the big red button marked dub, Terje picks up the echo and drops a Bobby O bassline, flirting wildly with acid house as revving synths light up the kosmische sky.

Remix duties fall to Phantasy man Erol Alkan, who replaces those dub disco flourishes with the strobe-lit pulse of Giallo, stripping the track back into a dark wired dancer which steals a beat on the imminent Electroclash revival. An insistent bassline and mechanical beat power straight into the peak time while the treated vocals take us all the way back to hearing Jeans Team in skinny jeans on the darkened dance floor of Trash.

Slip into your tin foil hat and do the “Maskindans,” it’s almost album time (not again!)

Jai Wolf has unveiled his initial summer tour dates on the heels of a recent sold out headline tour around Coachella. Starting next month he’ll make stops at Free Press Summer Fest, Red Rocks, Electric Forest and more, before heading to Capitol Hill Block Party in July and Lollapalooza and HARD Summer in August, with many other dates along the way. He’ll cap off the summer with a hometown headline show at Brooklyn Steel on August 25th. It marks his first NYC headline show in 2017 since playing Terminal 5 late last year. A list of dates is below with more to be announced soon.

The recent touring comes in support of his new single, “Starlight,” featuring vocals from Mr Gabriel. “Starlight” picked up where his debut EP, Kindred Spirits, left off by melting the lines between indie electronic, hip hop, and 80s pop, proving Jai Wolf is a promising young artist with a distinct, emotional sound and style. Both “Starlight” and Kindred Spirits are available now via Mom+Pop.
