Ohhh boy! Burger Boogaloo is back on Saturday, June 30th and Sunday, July 1st with a whip-crackin’, damn good, “shok”-inducing lineup! This year’s Boogaloo will include performances from Devo, The Damned, Le Shok, Mudhoney, Traditional Fools, The Mummies, and plenty of others. That’s right, folks; Devo are playing their first gig in 3 years right here in Oakland’s Mosswood Park. Of course, no Burger bash would be complete without our legendary host, John Waters, who will be returning for the fourth year in a row! Whether you’re a first timer or a yearly Booger, this year’s lineup has something for everyone. We’ve got a gut feeling that you’re gonna have a good time.

A Place To Bury Strangers have revealed the next single from their forthcoming album, Pinned. “There’s Only One Of Us” is a haunting, harmonized response to the tensions of our current political climate. Guitarist/singer Oliver Ackermann says about the song, “I am a person. We are all animals. We are all on this planet. This planet is one of billions speeding through space. It is incredible to be alive.”

Accompanying today’s single release is a video directed by Elizabeth Skadden. “The inspiration comes from the foghorn bass line, military drum beat, and kamikaze guitars that intimate a war taking place,” says Skadden. “Talking to the band, I learned the ‘war’ was people under the siege of making a creative project. The work the band does to create the song is expressed in the ‘totem’ built over the course of the music video. Visually, I broke the song into its sonic elements and assigned each its own visual, such as the shifting red and blue lights. The lighting setups were inspired by a Fad Gadget performance from the 1980s, and films by Pedro Almodovar and Kathryn Bigelow.”

For well over a decade now, A Place to Bury Strangers— Ackermann, Dion Lunadon, and, officially, drummer Lia Simone Braswell—have become well known for their unwavering commitment to unpredictable, often bewildering live shows, and total, some might say dangerous volume. They don’t write setlists. They frequently write new songs mid-set. They deliberately provoke and sabotage sound people in a variety of cruel yet innovative ways. They can and will always surprise you.

April 13th marks the release of Pinned, the band’s fifth full-length, via Dead Oceans. It finds A Place To Bury Strangers converting difficult moments into some of their most urgent work to date. It’s their first since the 2016 election, and their first since the 2014 closing of Death By Audio, the beloved Brooklyn DIY space where Ackerman lived, worked, and created with complete freedom. It’s a clear and honest statement of intent, not just for everything that follows, but for this band as a whole.

A Place To Bury Strangers will tour extensively in support of Pinned starting this spring. They’ll kick things off at SXSW this month before heading to Europe and eventually traversing the U.S. through June. A full list of dates is below.

DJ Koze returns with his second single from knock knock, his forthcoming album on Pampa Records. “Illumination” follows the previously released “Seeing Aliens” and is the first knock knock track Koze has shared featuring vocals. The ever-unique Róisín Murphy becomes a cyborg funk diva on “Illumination.” “Working on a song together with Roísín is even better than not working at all,” says Koze. Listen below.

Like all DJ Koze records, knock knock exists outside of trend and influence. In fact, knock knock is a step further beyond: absolutely every single thing here, from grooves to voices to handclaps, is otherworldly and unique. Which is not to say it is utter alien abstraction. There is still disco, there is still soul, there is still techno, there is still hip hop, there is still psychedelia – there are even wafts of easy listening, lost crackly thrift store record memories and indie rock – but though it may sound familiar, it never does what your brain thinks it’s going to do.And that’s what is crucial here. Koze is a world-maker. You don’t get to choose how you hear his music – you enter his world or you don’t, that’s it. And that’s why individual influences, whether it’s the trippy German techno that’s always rippled through his albums or the beat-scene abstract hip hop that he incorporated into his DJ-Kicks mix in 2015, are all but irrelevant. Though he’d never compare himself to anyone else, Koze only makes sense in the way that other world-builders do, from Bowie to Sun Ra, Outkast to Kate Bush. And Knock Knock is far and away his greatest statement of that. It’s an album that came together slowly and steadily, his working processes arcane and mysterious in their steady accumulation of sound and inspiration. It’s so complete and bursting with detail and consistency from every microsecond that you’d swear it was meticulously planned (but there was no master plan) to create a definitive artifact: the record itself decided when it was ready. And now it is ready, the most perfectly constructed portal into that other world, you had better be ready too!

Shopping are pleased to present the video for “Suddenly Gone,” before kicking off their NorthAmerican tour tomorrow night in Boston at Great Scott! The tour takes them all across the US and Canada, including stops at both Savannah Stopover and SXSW, in support of The Official Body, out last month on FatCat Records. The “Suddenly Gone” video, directed by LA-based director and animator Lessa Millet, “talks about labour and resources,” says band member Rachel Aggs. “It’s about feeling used and undervalued in a relationship or, more generally, as a queer and/or a person of colour making music or art in the UK and how that can feel very draining.” She adds, “you can feel overlooked for years and then suddenly tokenized when your identity becomes buzz-worthy or fashionable.

So much of the guitar music we love originates from roots and blues music made by and for people of colour and the same goes for dance and disco that has its roots so firmly in queer culture. We are asking people to reflect on what our cultural landscape would really look like if it weren’t for those pioneering but marginalized artists and in particular what our cities will eventually look like if queer spaces and independent gig venues continue to be forced to close.”

In creating the video, Millet says, “I went off of the energy of the song and the feeling behind it – this feeling of ‘I see what you’re doing, and I’m done being used.’ It’s optimistic and angry at the same time. In looking for images I just thought about all the instances a small group of people profit from everyone else, which way the money river flows, where does it pool. I think the magic tricks and hand shadows were a good metaphor for all the distractions that prevent us from seeing what is going on underneath.”

“It also suggests a parallel between this kind of emotional, creative draining and the terrifying environmental consequences of reckless money-grabbing corporations,” Aggs continues, “undervaluing and exploiting our natural resources and the impact of that on people living and working in more precarious parts of the world.”

The Pitchfork Music Festival returns to Chicago’s Union Park Friday, July 20 through Sunday, July 22 for its thirteenth year. The 2018 lineup is being unveiled in three parts over the next few weeks via a hand-painted mural in Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood, which is also being livestreamed on Pitchfork.com. Committed to striking a balance between discovery and celebration through a diverse, unexpected lineup, the Pitchfork Music Festival continues to be one the world’s most accessible and exciting weekends in music.

Staying true to its roots, the 2018 Pitchfork festival will be the most Chicago-centric lineup of any past year, featuring a number of hometown acts including Melkbelly, Joshua Abrams & Natural Information Society, Ravyn Lenae, and more.

“From both the standpoint of a programmer and a musician, I’m really proud that we we’re experiencing a tidal wave of incredible Chicago music,” said festival director Mike Reed. “This year’s lineup reflects a tipping point of the last few years and that the greater world is truly feeling that wave as well.”

Pitchfork Music Festival passes are on sale now for $75 a day or $175 for a three-day pass. The Pitchfork +PLUS upgrade is $375 for a three-day pass and includes a variety of exclusive amenities such as premium food vendors and private specialty bars. Details are available here.

What’s Your Rupture? is pleased to announce the signing of Brooklyn art rock unit BODEGA. With wild minimalism and sharp wit, BODEGA revitalizes the rock and roll vocabulary under the influence of post punk, contemporary pop, hip-hop, kraut rock, and folk-derived narrative songwriting.

With the eyes of filmmakers, Ben Hozie (guitar, vocals) and Nikki Belfiglio (vocals) turn the documentary on themselves, finding the political in the personal. Formerly of prankster rock collective Bodega Bay, known for its outlandish critical stunts, their blend of essay and confession bears witness to the harsh poetry of being human in the digital age.

Joined by Montana Simone (drums), Madison Velding-Vandam (guitar) and Heather Elle (bass), BODEGA are unveiling their debut single, “How Did This Happen ?!,” a standout from their many live shows around New York City. Accompanying the single is a 360-degree interactive video showcasing the band’s unique live performance.

“How Did This Happen ?!” is the first song from BODEGA’s forthcoming debut album due out this summer. It was recorded and produced by Austin Brown (Parquet Courts) on the same Tascam 388 tape machine used for their LP Light Up Gold. It was mixed and mastered by Jonathan Schenke at Dr. Wu’s.
