Rewind Review: Ty Segall – Live in San Francisco (2015)
Ty Segall is so prolific that I’m surprised it took him until 2015 to release a live album. He seems to put out a new record every month, so it feels like he should have three live albums by now.
The psych-fuzz whiz kid opens his live set with, oddly enough, “Wave Goodbye.” It starts out with low bass and then kicks into squealing high gear that has the small crowd cheering in joy. It sounds like something Tom Petty wishes he could release on his new record, but fears it would alienate his long-time fans. “Slaughterhouse” (from the album of the same name) is pure freak-out punk rock with a little Nirvana vocals sprinkled on top for good measure. “Death” mixes stoner rock with punk so fast it might give your ears friction burns. It’s one of the best cuts on the record.
“I Bought My Eyes” is one of Segall’s biggest hits, and he lets it rip on this live album. The guitars seem to come at you from all sides while Segall’s vocals are somehow gentle in the din. “Feel” borders on arena rock territory at first, but the sleeveless denim jacket riffs cut it off at the front door (which is a good thing).
“The Hill” follows the band’s friend, Julie, telling a joke, and next up is “Thank God for the Sinners,” which sounds like something Buzzcocks cooked up at their second jam session. Segall claims “Standing at the Station” “is about the cow trade.” I don’t know if that’s true, but I do know that it’s a swaggering, wild blues-influenced tidal wave coming out of your speakers.
The album ends with another of Segall’s hits – “What’s Inside Your Heart.” I’m sure the fans at this gig told him how their hearts were full of palpitations from being shaken by so much rock. It’s a strong ending to a strong record.
I know this entire review has essentially been me saying this record is non-stop blaring madness, but that’s the best way I describe it. You’ll understand once you hear it. Ty Segall is making crazy records, and we should all be grateful to him for doing it. The world needs more live records, and live performers, like this.

Rewind Review: Fuzz – self-titled (2013)
Not one to rest on his laurels, Ty Segall has more side projects than a street hustler. Fuzz is one of his loudest and best. Along with Roland Cosio (bass) and Charlie Moothart (guitar), Segall (on vocals and drums instead of his usual guitar) and his pals created an album of metal distortion that was hard to match in 2013 and is still hard to match today.
The band is appropriately named, as the opener, “Earthen Gate,” starts like a bluesy heavy metal ballad but transforms into a heavy chugging fuzzed-out battle hymn. “Sleigh Ride” has, as far as I can tell, nothing to do with Christmas and jingle bells, but everything to do with the band’s love of Cream and Black Sabbath. This love of 1960’s metal bands continues on “What’s in My Head?”, in which Fuzz drifts back and forth between psychedelia and stoner metal.
“HazeMaze” hits hard right out of the gate. It’s like the soundtrack to a battle between giant robots. Seriously, someone needs to put this in the next Pacific Rim movie. “Loose Sutures” is excellent stoner metal. It’s full of reverbed vocals, heavy guitars, and pounding drums that sound like Segall decided to skip a day at the gym and made up for it on his kit.
“Preacher” is Cream mixed with Blue Cheer. “Raise” is Cream if Clapton, Bruce, and Baker said, “Screw it, turn up full volume on everything.” when recording (which, actually, I’m sure they did now and then). The rhythm grooves in it are superb. The album ends with “One,” the longest track on the album at just over six minutes (Fuzz doesn’t mess around.). It’s glorious, hard-hitting controlled instrumental chaos. The mosh pit this must induce is probably batshit crazy.
This record would’ve been in my top 10 of 2013 had I been keeping lists back then. They’ve put out a second record by now, II, so I need to seek it out pronto. You should, too. Seek out both. Get fuzzy.

Goggs – self-titled
Ty Segall, not content to be involved in at least three bands, has joined / started a fourth – Goggs (Charles Moothart – guitar, bass, drums, Ty Segall – guitar, bass, drums, Chris Shaw – vocals). Their first album is a bonkers rock ride not unlike an old wooden roller coaster that thrills and beats you up at the same time.
“Falling In” has a great Stooges feel to it in the bass and drums and a Sham 69 (or should I say Cult, since Shaw is the ex-Cult vocalist?) feel to the vocals. “Shotgun Shooter” has bass so loud, fuzzy, and heavy that Lightning Bolt will be envious. “She Got Harder” is snotty punk, both in the instrumentation but especially in the vocals. The way Shaw belts out the lyrics while his guitar shreds and Segall destroys his kit is great.
Speaking of drums, they’re even crazier on “Smoke the Wurm.” The self-titled track starts off weird and quirky and then turns into angry goth-punk. “Assassinate the Doctor” is just as odd. It’s almost a meltdown. “Needle Trade Off,” is back to the angry post-punk with fierce bass and lyrics practically spat into the microphone. “Future Nothing” is so old school punk that it even sounds like it was recorded in 1981.
“Final Notice” adds what sounds like old video game noises to the ritualistic beats and bizarre screams and chants. It’s a weird (mostly) instrumental that goes into the closer – “Glendale Junkyard,” which hits hard and loud before fading out with snare drum taps and distorted guitar fuzz.
This is easily the most punk record I’ve heard so far this year. It’s crazy, loud, squeaky, weird, and just what you need to drown out the noise of an election year.
